Can You Add Payments to a Softr App? Stripe, Explained
Yes. Softr connects to Stripe, and once it does, your app can charge money in four distinct ways. The interesting question is not whether payments work, it is which of the four shapes your business is, because the setup differs for each.
Here they are in plain language, no payment jargon, with what each one fits.
Short answer: four payment shapes, all through Stripe
One-time payments for selling a thing once. Subscriptions for charging monthly or yearly. Gated content for putting your app behind a paywall. And split payments for marketplaces that pay vendors their share. Softr with Stripe covers all four; your job is knowing which one you are building.

Shape one: one-time payments
The simplest: a customer clicks buy, pays once through Stripe checkout, and gets the thing. Digital products, bookings, services, event tickets, deposits. The payment succeeds, the record updates, and any follow-up, a confirmation email, an access grant, runs on automation.
Fits: anyone selling discrete things or sessions without recurring billing.
Shape two: subscriptions
Stripe handles the recurring billing, monthly or yearly, cards retried on failure, upgrades and downgrades, while Softr controls what a paying subscriber can see and do. Coaching programs, SaaS-style tools, premium communities, service retainers.
The part people miss: the subscription is not just a charge, it is a permission. When someone subscribes, their account gains access; when they cancel, it falls away. That link between billing state and app access is the actual build, and it is where a clean setup pays off.
Shape three: gated content and memberships
Technically subscriptions wearing a different outfit, but worth naming separately because the intent differs: here the content is the product. Courses, resource libraries, member directories, premium articles. Free users see the lobby; members see the building. Softr's plans and permissions map tiers to visibility, and Stripe collects on schedule.
Fits: creators, educators, communities, anyone whose value is access itself.
Shape four: split payments for marketplaces
The advanced one, and our specialty. When your platform collects from customers but the money belongs partly to vendors, instructors, or providers, Stripe Connect splits every payment at checkout: your commission separates automatically, the vendor's share routes to their own account, and payouts hit their bank on your rules. Vendors onboard themselves and watch their earnings in their own dashboard.
We wrote the full plain-language breakdown in how we build vendor portals with split payments, and it is the payment engine behind every marketplace we ship.
The one thing to decide first
Before wiring anything: what exactly does a successful payment unlock? A product shipped, a booking confirmed, a tier of access, a vendor payout? That answer determines which shape you are building and what the data model needs to record. Payments bolted on without that answer are how apps end up with paying customers the app does not recognize. Decide the unlock, then the shape, then the wiring, in that order.
Mixing shapes in one app
Real businesses often need two shapes at once, and that is fine. A course platform sells one-time workshops alongside a monthly membership. A marketplace charges vendors a subscription and splits every sale. The rule that keeps this clean: each shape gets its own product in Stripe and its own unlock in the app, so billing states never blur into each other. Apps get messy when one payment tries to mean two things.
What it costs to set up
Stripe takes its standard per-transaction fee regardless of who builds your app. The build itself depends on the shape: one-time payments and simple gates are quick additions to any Softr project, subscriptions with tiered access take more care, and split-payment marketplaces are a proper build with onboarding and dashboards. All of it lands far below custom development, our pricing is published, and shape four has its own line there.
Frequently asked questions
Do customers leave my site to pay? Checkout runs through Stripe's secure payment flow, then returns the customer to your app. They experience it as paying on your platform, and card details never touch your systems, which is exactly what you want.
Can I offer free trials or discount codes? Yes, both are Stripe features that pair with Softr memberships: trials that convert to paid automatically, and promo codes at checkout.
What about PayPal or other processors? Stripe is the native, first-class integration and the one we recommend building on. Other processors generally mean workarounds; if a specific one is a hard requirement, raise it at scoping, not after.
Is Stripe Connect overkill if I only have a few vendors? No, the opposite. Manual payouts are tolerable at three vendors and a nightmare at thirty, and switching payment plumbing mid-flight is painful. If vendors are the model, start on Connect. The vendor portal post shows what they get.
The short version
Softr takes payments through Stripe in four shapes: one-time sales, subscriptions, gated memberships, and marketplace split payments. The build is deciding what a payment unlocks and wiring access to billing state, which is why the same platform serves a course creator, a SaaS founder, and a full vendor marketplace. Pick the shape before the tools, and the tools cooperate.
