Softr vs Bubble vs FlutterFlow: Which No-Code Platform Fits Your Project?

People line these three up like they are competing for the same job. They are not.

We get the “Softr or Bubble or FlutterFlow” question a lot, and almost every time, the right answer comes from one thing the person has not told us yet: what are you actually building? A client portal is a different animal from a marketplace with custom pricing logic, which is a different animal from an app someone downloads from the App Store. These three tools each nail one of those and struggle with the others.

So instead of crowning a winner, here is what each one is genuinely good at, and the questions that point you to the right one.

They are not really the same kind of tool

Quick map before we go deep.

Softr builds web apps and portals on top of a database, fast, with logins and permissions handled for you. Bubble builds complex, fully custom web applications with real logic, closer to visual programming. FlutterFlow builds native mobile apps, the kind that live in the App Store and Google Play.

Same “no-code” label, three different destinations. Choosing well is mostly about knowing which destination you are heading to

Softr: fast web portals and internal tools

Softr is the fastest path when what you need is a web app people log into: a client portal, an internal tool, a membership site, a directory. It reads from a database, usually Airtable, and gives you pages, logins, and permissions without much fuss.

The trade is customization. Softr works through polished building blocks, so you get speed and simplicity in exchange for not being able to build absolutely any interaction you can imagine. For the huge category of “portal or internal app on top of structured data,” that trade is almost always worth it. You are live in days, not months, and you can make changes yourself.

Softr is the right pick when: you want a web portal or internal tool, you have your data in Airtable or a spreadsheet, and getting it working quickly matters more than pixel-level custom behavior.

Bubble: complex, fully custom web apps

Bubble is a different beast. It is a full visual development platform, which means you can build genuinely complex web apps: marketplaces with custom matching, SaaS products with intricate logic, anything where the behavior is the point.

That power has a price, and the price is time and a learning curve. Bubble is closer to programming than Softr is. You have more control and you can build almost anything for the web, but you will spend longer doing it, and a complex Bubble app usually wants someone who really knows the tool.

Bubble is the right pick when: you are building a complex custom web application, the logic is unusual or central to the product, and you need control that block-based tools cannot give you.

FlutterFlow: real native mobile apps

FlutterFlow is the odd one out, and in a good way. It builds native mobile apps, the kind you install on a phone from the App Store or Google Play. It is built on Flutter, so the apps are properly native, not a website in an app wrapper.

If your project genuinely needs to be a downloadable phone app with native device features, FlutterFlow is the one of these three built for that. Softr can give you an installable web app that works great on phones, but that is not the same as a store-listed native app. When the store listing and native behavior actually matter, that difference is real.

FlutterFlow is the right pick when: you need a true native mobile app in the app stores, with native device features, not a web app that happens to work on mobile.

The three questions that decide it

Run through these and the choice usually makes itself.

1.          Is it a web portal or internal tool on top of your data? Go with Softr. Fast, simple, done.

2.          Is it a complex, fully custom web app where the logic is the product? Go with Bubble. More power, more time.

3.          Does it need to be a native mobile app in the app stores? Go with FlutterFlow. That is its home.

Most business software people describe to us is the first one. Portals, dashboards, internal tools, member sites. That band is enormous, and Softr covers it beautifully. The other two matter when your project clearly steps outside it.

Speed, skill, and cost, side by side

Speed to launch: Softr is fastest. Bubble is slower for complex builds. FlutterFlow depends on the app, plus app-store review time.

Skill needed: Softr is the most approachable. Bubble asks the most of you. FlutterFlow sits in between and leans technical.

Best fit: Softr for portals and tools. Bubble for custom web apps. FlutterFlow for native mobile.

Data: Softr pairs naturally with Airtable. Bubble has its own database. FlutterFlow connects to backends like Firebase or Supabase.

None of these is “better.” They are aimed at different targets.

Our honest take

We build on Softr, and we will tell you plainly why: most of what businesses actually need is a portal, an internal tool, or a member app on top of data they already have. For that, Softr is the fastest, most maintainable route, and it is what we do all day.

But we are not going to push you onto Softr if your project is really a native mobile app or a logic-heavy custom marketplace. If FlutterFlow or Bubble is the right tool for what you are building, that is what we will tell you. Using the wrong platform because it was the one someone happened to sell you is how projects stall.

Frequently asked questions

Can Softr build a mobile app? Softr apps are responsive and can be installed to a phone’s home screen as a web app, which covers a lot of use cases. It does not produce a native app for the App Store. For that, FlutterFlow is the fit.

Is Bubble harder than Softr? Yes. Bubble gives you more power and more control, and in exchange it has a steeper learning curve and longer build times. Softr trades some of that flexibility for speed and simplicity.

Which is cheapest? It depends on the project more than the platform. For a simple portal, Softr is usually the most economical overall because it is faster to build and easier to maintain. A complex app on any platform costs more.

Can I move from one to another later? Not easily. These tools are quite different under the hood, so switching usually means rebuilding. That is exactly why picking the right one up front matters.

The short version

Softr, Bubble, and FlutterFlow are not three versions of the same thing. Softr builds web portals and internal tools fast. Bubble builds complex custom web apps. FlutterFlow builds native mobile apps. Match the tool to what you are building: portal or internal tool means Softr, logic-heavy custom web app means Bubble, native mobile app means FlutterFlow.
